Lord V

The single person that had shot lots of insects and marco shots is none other that Lord V. As of today, he had about 10,787 photos macro shots listed on his Flickr site. His photographs are crispy sharp. He shot with flashes mounted on bracket and softened by his modified diffuser. You can check it here, http://lordv.smugmug.com/popular/#120917883 . His methods are shared and discussed here,http://www.flickr.com/groups/mimicry/discuss/66514/ His equipment and attachment are show here :http://www.flickr.com/photos/lordv/sets/72157594293307036/show/.

The fact that he uses flashes, he was able to reduce the aperture sometimes to as much as f16, so that he can get a better depth of filed and more saturated colours on the insect. The great thing about Flickr is that we can check the shot property and learn from the setting Lord V uses. Here is the property of this shot, the aperture is f5.6 and shot with 65mm macro lens.
I did a cut and paste of the property here.

Photographer - Do we need them?

Yes, photographers are like hunters, we shoot and thrill at slicing an instant into permanent eternity. Photographs are always biased, coloured with the prejudice of the photographer. But there again, all form of writing are prejudice, and it is forward to others for interpretations whether accurate or otherwise, bound again by the prejudice of the interpreters.
Yeah, photographers now seems to think we have the right to shoot at sight, as we fancy, becoming very intrusive and dangerous. And as we compose and shoot we created authorship and IP rights for ourselves. Interesting. With a depressing of the shutter release, god like, creatively creating a work of art. So powerful. Photography has acquired and accumulated so much power over the years. At times, taking the role of the Robin Hood, at another, fighting for the underprivileged, and yet at another suffer Posttraumatic stress disorder and died of it.
So do we need them, Photographer?

Painting with Light - seduction of the rain

It had not been raining for the last few days. The temperature is hot and dry. It was reported that there is an increase of wild fire springing up sporadically around the island. The weather was hot and we wished that a shower would help to drive away the dry spell. The rain came and we felt so much cooler. It stopped after an hour. Immediately after, I grabbed my camera and headed straight to the Ang Moh Kio park. In the lift I met a lady who was impressed with my foldable bike and was surprise when I told her I was going to the garden to shoot some insects and spiders.

The rain clear up the pond and drove away the oily layer that had stood on top of the water casting an irregular pattern. There were so many droplets of water that rolled and glittered on the lotus leave. I was awed. I quickly took out my camera and started to shoot. After a few shots, I felt some rain droplets on my hand. Look up and see more rain droplets coming down. I packed up my camera, rolled the bicycle up to the path way and cycled wildly towards the MacDonald for shelter.

I waited for the rain to stop and went back to the lotus pond for more picture. This time, it did  not rain again. I spent noon and an additional hour to photograph the insects and the plants. The pond is clear. Temperature cooling. As I was lying prone shooting, I notice my lens was fogging. I had to face it up wards and let the fog clear form the lens. I suspect the air-conditioned at Macdonald had lowered the temperature causing it to fog when in contact with high humidity.

Painting with Light

Amazing place to photography lotus and nature

I had been going to this lotus pond for at least a year. I had not been shooting much at this pond. Recently the lotus was flourishing and it is a great sight. I had been inspired and spend the whole week shooting and observing the pond. I learn a lot a bout light and shadow.

This is my attempt to paint with light. Love the reflection and colors.
